| Preferred specimen: |
1.0 mL serum, red top tube or SST. Remove serum from cells and transfer to a plastic transport tube.

| Notes: |
Acute phase specimen should be drawn as soon as possible after onset of disease (within 7 days). Convalescent specimen should be drawn 10 or more days after the acute phase. Label the specimens as acute or convalescent. |
| Unacceptable specimen: |
Severely lipemic, icteric, hemolyzed, contaminated or heat-inactivated specimens. |
| Transport temp: |
Refrigerated. Freeze if not sent to lab within 48 hours. |

<0.75 IV: Negative - No IgG antibody to varicella-zoster detected. 0.75-0.99 IV: Equivocal - Suggest repeat testing in 10-14 days. >0.99 IV: Positive - IgG antibody to varicella-zoster detected indicative of current or past varicella-zoster infection. The best evidence for current infection is a significant change between acute/convalescent specimens, where both specimens are assayed at the same time. |
