Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT)
Preferred specimen: One full unopened light blue top tube (3.2% sodium citrate). Light blue top tube must be completely filled to ensure proper blood to anticoagulant ratio (9:1). Mix tube by gentle inversion 3-6 times immediately after collection. Do not uncap tube. If obtaining specimen with a butterfly, draw a waste tube first and discard.
Minimum specimen: 90% filled light blue top tube (3.2% sodium citrate) or 0.5 ml plasma.
Acceptable specimen: NON-HEPARINZED PATIENTS: Do not centrifuge. Do not remove top from tube. Send unopened tube same day.
IF PATIENT IS HEPARINZED: Centrifuge specimen within one hour of collection. Transfer top half of plasma to plastic transport tube and FREEZE immediately. Transport specimen FROZEN.
Unacceptable specimen: Gross hemolysis, clotted specimen, improper blood to citrate ratio, specimen collected in tube other than 3.2% citrate.
Transport temp: Room temperature for light blue top tube. Send unopened tube to lab within 24 hours. Frozen for plasma.
