History
Specimen collection including phlebotomy is a key element in the pre-analytical process
and essential to providing quality laboratory services. As part of its educational mission,
BBPL provides phlebotomy to training newly hired employees and others interested in entering
the field. BBPL partners with Metro Business College to provide phlebotomy experience for
their Medical Assistants program, and is currently a provider of phlebotomy training for the
Missouri Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Entrance Requirements
A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Previous healthcare experience and/or
science coursework is a plus.
The Program
Phlebotomy Training at Boyce and Bynum Pathology Laboratories consists of two programs:
Phlebotomy 100: Basic Principles of Phlebotomy
This program is for newly hired BBPL phlebotomy staff as well as individuals interested in
receiving basic phlebotomy training with the possibility of employment at BBPL. Course length
is 80 contact hours, including 20 didactic hours and 60 clinical hours including 40 clinical
hours at assigned Boyce and Bynum collection sites. Written and practical exams with a 70% or
greater score is required to meet basic core competency.
Phlebotomy 200: Advanced Phlebotomy - Principles and Practice
This program encompasses extensive clinical training and didactic hours that provide more
detailed study of human anatomy and physiology. Point-of-Care testing principles and laboratory
organization and operations are also included. Course Length is 160 contact hours, including 40
didactic hours and 120 clinical hours. Written and practical exams with a 70% or greater score
is required to receive certification. Successful completion of this program will make the student
eligible to sit for the ASCP Board of Registry exam for Phlebotomy Technician.
Both training programs encompass the following core competency areas:
- Knowledge -Understands basic anatomy and physiology, quality and safety, specimen types
and variables, order of draw and collection devices.
- Technical Skills - Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological
specimens for analysis.
- Problem Solving - Recognizes unexpected results and takes appropriate action.
- Communication - Utilizes verbal and nonverbal communication skills to effectively
communicate with patients, staff and management; has good customer service skills.
The Success
BBPL has participated in the training of many students from Metro Business College, some
of which have become BBPL employees. Metro Business College has recognized BBPL as employer
of the year. BBPL also received Employer of the Year honors from MAPCCS as a result of our
long standing alliance with Metro Business College.
BBPL is a provider of phlebotomy training for the Missouri Division of Vocational
Rehabilitation. Six students have completed the training program and one is currently
employed by Boyce and Bynum.
The Faculty
The clinical training faculty consists of experienced Boyce and Bynum phlebotomy
supervisors and laboratory professionals. Phlebotomy training is overseen by Diana
Inman, MT(AMT), Education Coordinator at Boyce and Bynum. The educational mission is
directed by William Thornton, PhD, MT(ASCP), Director of Laboratory Services at Boyce
and Bynum.
