Boyce and Bynum Pathology Laboratories offers educational programs leading to careers in medical
laboratory science. Core components of BBPL's educational mission include clinical training programs
for Medical Laboratory Scientists, Pathologists' Assistants, and Pathology and Dermatology Residents.
As a clinical training site, our laboratory and medical practice offers advantages that are attained
from a private group with a strong commitment to clinical services as well as an academic culture due
to our commitment to education, clinical laboratory test development, and integrated, professional
relationships with leading colleges and universities.
While at BBPL, students are encouraged to immerse themselves into our culture because we believe that
the academic environment, the surgical pathology caseload, opportunities to learn from different
professional role models, and social interactions are all important components of the education and
maturation process as students matriculate and develop the art of a practicing professional.
The transition from student through residency is a critical period and a rotation with our group prepares
students and residents to be competent and confident in their abilities, wherever they begin their
professional practice.
The Bynum Medical Arts Institute is a nonprofit corporation 501(c)(3) that promotes the BBPL educational
mission by supporting training programs for healthcare professionals at all levels. For additional
program details, e-mail

As a clinical affiliate site for the University of Nebraska Medical Center School of Allied Health
Professionals, students matriculating from
UNMC's Medical Laboratory Science Program
may choose BBPL to complete the clinical component of their Bachelor of Science degree in Medical
Laboratory Science. Program completion prepares individuals to sit for the Medical Laboratory
Scientist national certification examination administered by the American Society for Clinical
Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification and entitles them to use MLS(ASCP) after their name to
verify that they are proficient in their field.
The MLS training program at BBPL starts with summer lab in Omaha, Nebraska and concludes with
nine-months in Columbia, whereby students gain practical experience in all areas of the clinical
laboratory including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and molecular diagnostics.
Immunohematology training is in conjunction with Boone Hospital Center.
The program emphasizes laboratory principles and procedures, clinical significance and application,
principles and practice of quality assurance, principles of laboratory management and supervision,
safety, instructional methods, and computer applications as established in the strategic didactic
curricula from UNMC.
Admission to the BBPL MLS program is facilitated by UNMC with the
University of Missouri-Columbia
as our neighbor educational partner. Accreditation is by the National Accrediting Agency for
Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). BBPL clinical training faculty members are approved by
UNMC and meet NAACLS requirements of certified MLS. Clinical training at BBPL is overseen by
our education coordinator who can be reached at 573-886-4600.
We are honored to have a clinical site affiliation with
Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science
and are committed to providing a comprehensive and practical training experience for graduate students
who are chosen to spend their Anatomic Pathology Clerkship in our practice. Admission to the program is
facilitated by RFU.
Students completing their 10-month practical course sequence at BBPL perform the duties of a Pathologists'
Assistant under the guidance of our certified preceptors at our Central Reference Laboratory,
Boone Hospital Center, and at the
University of Missouri Department of Pathology.
Emphasis is placed on developing the students' skills of gross tissue description, dissection and
frozen section preparation in surgical pathology. In autopsy pathology, emphasis is placed on
autopsy technique, including evisceration and block dissection.
Opportunities to interact with professional staff with diverse medical and personal interests, keen
analytical skills, decades of combined laboratory experience, exceptional diagnostic abilities,
and broad ranges of knowledge is an everyday occurrence. Training in anatomic pathology is complemented
by exposure to tumor boards, fine needle aspiration clinics, a variety of continuous medical education
teleconferences, and seminars where students are encouraged to either present interesting cases or
participate in other ways. In addition, students have opportunity to learn about the regulatory,
compliance, continuous quality improvement, and management methods of an independent laboratory,
particularly the histology department.
The PA educational experience is enhanced by interaction with the Medical Laboratory Scientists
(MLS) training program. PA students study side-by-side with MLS students, accessing materials relevant
to both curricula.
Pathology and dermatology residents may schedule elective rotations with BBPL throughout the
academic year at our Central Reference Laboratory and Boone Hospital Center.
An application process is required to insure resident credit and to establish hospital privileges
in advance. Training emphasis can be customized to individual resident needs in all major areas
of surgical pathology, clinical pathology, molecular diagnostics, cytopathology, and dermatopathology.
